Tahsis Junior Canadian Rangers (JCRs)
The JCRs are part of the Canadian Cadet Organizations and are linked to the Canadian Rangers. The program aims to offer young Canadians, aged 12 to 18, in remote and isolated communities across Canada an opportunity to participate in a range of developmental activities in a formal setting. It also aims to engage them with their local communities. Our training falls under the three following categories: Ranger, Life, and Traditional Skills. We focus the training for the year based on the exercises we will be doing that year and the youths’ needs.
How often do you meet?
Based on the youths’ schedule we typically meet once a week for regular JCR meetings. The Adult committee would meet 4 times a year.
How much does it cost?
It is free. Having some camping gear is an asset, but not a necessity.
What does an Adult Committee Member do?
An adult committee member helps run the program. Things like chaperone, fundraiser, share knowledge, and help with training and exercise planning and ideas.
What is an exercise?
A JCR exercise is training where we leave the community to further expand on the skills we have been learning. There are two exercises that are conducted each fiscal year that all of the Tahsis JCRs are able to attend. These exercises are usually during a weekend or school break, and are 3 nights in length. Some examples include: ATV, horseback riding, urban navigation, skiing, and many more. There are also opportunities for other training, but those are dependent on the number of spots available.
How old do I have to be?
The JCR program is for youth between the ages of 12-18.
What if I’m only 11 years old?
If you are 11, you are able to attend training and local events as long as you have parental supervision.
What is PHASE?
PHASE stands for Promoting Healthy And Safe Experiences. This includes teaching the youth about healthy relationships, cyber bullying, suicide, abuse, sexual orientation, and online sexual exploitation. This course gives youth the resources and knowledge to recognize when they or their friend are in an unhealthy situation and gives them local resources to navigate the situation.

What are Ranger Skills?
Ranger Skills includes: Marksmanship, orienteering, survival skills, radio communications, first aid, drill and more.
What are Life Skills?
Life Skills include: Cooking, sewing, hygiene, healthy relationships, operating power tools, vehicle maintenance, public speaking, leadership, PHASE program and more.

What are Traditional Skills?
Traditional skills depend on the community and local culture. Some traditional include: Horseback riding, archery, fishing, trapping, storytelling, cooking/preparing traditional foods, and many more.
